Not long ago many of you took a virtual walk through my closet. Since that time I accepted an offer for a dream job and will need to make some adjustments to what I wear on a daily basis. Being a minimalist, I don’t want to spend a lot of time or money on shopping. I do value quality, however, and needed the input of others to make the process as simple as possible. Simply put, I needed fashion help.
So I sheepishly asked for it.
Trust me, I had more interest in having a cavity filled than spending an hour or more in a dressing room with a stylist. Getting fashion help didn’t sound glamorous or fun to me. Just as I expected, when I arrived the room was full of outfits I’d never buy, some bags I love but don’t have money to invest in, and even not-so-cute items.
But to my surprise, I also truly liked some of the items my stylist pulled for me. These were items I’d never have pulled off the rack to try had she not suggested them. The anxiety subsided when I made the decision to enjoy the experience. I discovered I’d been shopping in a department that doesn’t fit my body size well and which shirts are flattering on my frame. There was much to learn, and I am glad I went. The best part? I bought some lovely items I can mix and match through a few different seasons, and I stayed within the budget my husband and I agreed on befre I set foot in the store. (Bonus: My stylist made a list of the items I liked but don’t need at this time. They can be purchased online in the future when I need to replace an item or add to my minimalist wardrobe.)
Are you fresh out of ideas in some area of your life? Could you use some fashion help, too? You might be surprised to discover that you can save time and money by asking for a little help. Seeking out the help of a stylist saved me loads of time and I learned a few things. All in all, a very productive experience!
PS – For you curious folks, I took advantage of Nordstrom’s free stylist program. Simply answer questions with the stylist over the phone prior to your appointment, and she will locate items to meet your needs. I’m 5″2′ on a good day, so it’s also wonderful that Nordstrom offers free alterations for all items purchased in store.
