If you care about growing as a person, you’ll find time to read. I haven’t always appreciated books, but now I love to read.
I didn’t realize this until I had a lengthy recovery from surgery a few years ago and I began filling my days with books. Because I don’t think it’s wise to ignore the world, and due to the fact that I’m a married mother of two children who works full time and does some other cool stuff on the side, I have formed a few habits to help me find time to learn amidst it all.
First, recognize that you have to find time to read. (News alert: You have the time of you’ll allocate it.) Minimalists identify what they value most and invest in these things. If you truly want to learn, you will stop giving time to things that matter less or find creative ways to integrate the learning into your routine.
1) Speed read! (No kidding. I know a great leader who listens to audio books at 2x speed to gain the knowledge more quickly.)
2) Travel – When my husband or I travel separately, I download books to pass the time alone.
3) My kids and I spend 45-60 minutes in the car each day together. We listen to podcasts sometimes and enjoy discussing them.
4) Stop reading a book if you’re not connecting to it and give your time to a more pertinent one.
5) Download the shortened eBook version or synopsis of a book on a Kindle.
6) Commit 30 minutes to reading at night (or more if you aren’t watching TV).
7) Podcasts (or audio books, if you prefer) make my miles on the treadmill pass by quickly three times a week.
8) Magazine articles and stories about others can be truly helpful and take little time to read.
9) Blogs – Instead of keeping a blog reader at this time, I search for what I specifically want to learn about to avoid being distracted.
